Since having my daughter coming up to 10 years ago, I have slowly learnt to work with and honour my own and natures cycles as a means of maintaining well being.
In doing so I have found watching the seasons change and marking this by honouring the old ways is a comfortable and celebratory way to manage and accept change, both in life and in my energy levels. Sometimes I’m motivated and want to step outside my comfort zone, sometimes I want to curl up in a ball and retreat to my cave. There is usually a pattern and a lot of benefit in trying to predict and work with it, rather than force things. As in midwifery going full circle to appreciate, that whilst there is sometimes a need for intervention, the natural and most effective way is to work with gravity. In life too we can benefit from working with the forces around us!
May sees the return of summertime, the lighter and longer evenings, we are surrounded by growth and rebirth. If we look to the natural world around us, the green growth and resurgence of life of the trees, plants, flowers, buds unfurling , new shoots on low and high reaching branches , birds busy feeding their young, the growing energy and new life is abundant.
We too, supported by the energies in the natural world around us, are prone and able at this time to be more energised, more optimistic, more hopeful, more sociable. It is a time to plan, to look forward, to branch out, reach up and move forward. We may find ourselves planning more, taking small steps or leaps of faith, planning holidays or short breaks away, thinking ahead, feeling excited and hopeful.
The May Day holiday is a celebration of this time. I was lucky enough to escape away for a night with my husband and two children over the May bank holiday to visit family and their new addition. Time away from the chores and daily grind to take strolls in beautiful countryside and surroundings, watching BGT in bed with ice cream and our first cuddles with my sister in law and brother in laws precious new bundle – it’s all about the little things, they bring such joy.

I was lucky enough to spend May Day itself with my dear friend Michele under her beautiful Oak tree. We had decided to turn to the old ways to honour and mark the return of summer as not only a means of celebrating the return of the sun, but also as a way to celebrate all that we are thankful for. So under her oak tree and the careful watch of her cats and 2 parenting robins we smudged and burnt sweet grass and sporax, celebrated and sent love and good wishes to all those we hold dear, and spoke of our wishes and dreams for ourselves and our loved ones before decorating her beautiful oak with brightly coloured ribbons and our written wishes. I then drummed, whilst Michele played her crystal singing bowl to seal our intent and give thanks.
It was a beautiful time spent very simply planting seeds of thought, taking time to honour, acknowledge celebrate and be thankful. We all have much to be grateful for and are rich in many ways if we only take the time to consider who and what brings us Joy. Thanks for reading , |
